India's Central Bureau of Investigation has initiated a probe of two members of the ruling Congress party as part of a wider review of alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks, a bureau official said Tuesday.
The investigation of Naveen Jindal, a lawmaker in the lower house of Parliament, and former minister Dasari Narayana Rao is likely to further embarrass Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, whose Congress party-led government is facing mounting economic problems and allegations of corruption.
India's federal auditor last year said the government lost billions of dollars in potential revenue in the allocation of coal blocks by the government between 2006 and 2009. Mr. Rao was the junior coal minister between May 2004 and April 2008.
