Geneva, May 31 (IANS) The UN Human Rights Council will hold a special session here Friday on the situation and the recent killings in Syria, Xinhua reported.

Over 100 people were killed in Syria's Houla last Friday. Opposition groups said it was a result of artillery fire from government forces while Syrian authorities blamed terrorist and extremist groups for the killings.

This will be the council's fourth special session on Syria.

The request for the session was submitted in a letter Wednesday by the ambassadors of Qatar, Turkey, US, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Denmark and the European Union. It was signed by 21 member States of the council and 30 observer states.

For a special session to be convened, the support of one-third of the members of the council -- 16 members or more -- is required.
