Yangon, May 28 (IANS) Myanmar will hire three gas turbines from Japan in a bid to ease the country's power shortage, the official media reported.

The deal on three 120-megawatt gas turbines from Japan was signed on the sidelines of an international conference in Tokyo, Xinhua quoted the New Light of Myanmar daily as saying.

Demonstrations were held recently against the government in several towns in Myanmar over frequent power cuts.

The authorities have barred factories and workshops from using electricity for six hours at night to enable power supply to the public during the peak period of 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
