London, March 5 (IANS) Colombian singer Shakira has been nominated for a prestigious award in Spain in recognition of her endless charity work.

The 35-year-old, a Unicef goodwill ambassador, is shortlisted for the Prince of Asturias Concord honour, reports contactmusic.com.

The honour celebrates individuals "whose work has significantly contributed to fostering peace, the defence of human rights, freedom, solidarity, the safeguarding of heritage, or, in general, the progress of humanity".

The singer established her educational organisation, the Barefoot Foundation, at the age of 18. In 2011, she used funds raised through the charity to build schools in her native Colombia and Haiti.

Previous recipients of the Concord accolade include world renowned scientist Stephen Hawking and "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling.
