Berlin, March 5 (IANS) Swiss international and Nuremberg striker Albert Bunjaku handed Monchengladbach a late 0-1 loss to stop their unbeaten run of eight matches.
Hoffenheim shared points with Cologne thanks to a late equaliser by German international striker Lukas Podolski.
Third positioned Monchengladbach failed to overtake Bayern Munich following a surprising loss at an uneventful match against Nuremberg at Easy Credit Stadium Sunday.
The "Fohlen" took over as expected against anxious Nuremberg that defended deep from the start. Monchengladbach failed to exploit their few opportunities until the first half against a well positioned Nuremberg defense.
In the second half, both sides piled up the pressure to stage a match on high pace. Nonetheless favourites Monchengladbach were unable to build up their offensive action thus Nuremberg seized the chance in the 87th minute when Bunjaku slotted home left footed, after he was fielded three minutes earlier, to flabbergast the guests.
Nuremberg extended their winning streak to three while Monchengladbach failed to extend their unbeaten streak. Nuremberg climb from 10th to 9th position with 30 points while Monchengladbach stay on third position with 47 points.
"We have not played badly but we had missed the vigor today," Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
"In the first half, Monchengladbach dominated but in the second half we improved our strategy. The goal in the 87th minute was the lucky punch for us," Nuremberg coach Dieter Hecking said.
In the other match Sunday, Hoffenheim gave away a neat lead to share points with Cologne after the late equaliser by Podolski.
Hoffenheim dominated the first half against passive Cologne. Logical Hoffenheim opened the scoring through defender Marvin Compper who headed home into top left in the 33rd minute. In the second half, Hoffenheim were a sloppy lot.
Hoffenheim slip from 9th to 10th position with 30 points whereas Cologne reside on 14th position on 25 points.
