Morelia (Mexico), March 19 (IANS/EFE) Students at a college in the western Mexican state of Michoacan have surrendered 29 buses they had held since last weekend as part of a protest, the state government said.
Students at the Vasco de Quiroga Rural Teachers College gradually returned the buses when surrounded by police in the town of Tiripetio, 17 km from the state capital of Morelia.
The buses were seized by students to mount pressure on authorities into giving them jobs in the state educational system automatically once they finished their studies, and to grant scholarships for study and renovation work at the college.
The students later handed over four cars belonging to multinational companies and a truck loaded with 20,000 liters of diesel fuel that they used to block access to the college.
Michoacan Gov. Fausto Vallejo Figueroa had given the students an ultimatum to give the buses back by Friday or have state police launch an operation to retrieve them.
The student teachers seized the vehicles by putting up blockades on the Morelia-Patzcuaro state highway, where passengers were forced to alight.
The Vasco de Quiroga Teachers College was founded 90 years ago and became the first ever created for the purpose of training teachers for the nation's rural areas.
