Helsinki, March 2 (IANS) Finnish paper companies are among the world's best in terms of environmental transparency, clean production, public reporting, sourcing and public reporting.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Environmental Paper Company Index, which rates paper producers on their global ecological footprint, has ranked world's 19 globally significant producers of fine paper, tissue and packaging.

Finnish companies included in ranking were fine paper producers Metsä Board (former M-Real), Stora Enso and UPM and soft tissue producer Metsä Tissue.

The companies have allowed WWF to scrutinize their global paper production on key environmental criteria, such as fibre coming from well-managed forests, clean production and public reporting, according to a statement of Good News, a Finland based news portal.

By allowing evaluation of their environmental performance, these companies are showing that they take environmental and social responsibility seriously, said Emmanuelle Neyroumande, manager of WWF International´s global pulp and paper work.

In fine paper category, Metsä Board was ranked fifth and Stora Enso sixth best, and in tissue paper category Metsä Tissue was ranked second just after the Swedish SCA.

Metsä Board, UPM and Metsä Tissue ranked also well in regard to their environmental management systems and public reporting.

The best scores on environmental footprint overall were achieved by companies in the packaging sector: SCA Container board with 85.55 percent and Mondi with 75.45 percent of achievable scores.

In the fine paper category, the best scores were achieved by Arjowiggins Graphic with 73.86 percent and in the tissue category by SCA Tissue with 65.13 percent scores.
