Mumbai, March 10 (IANS) Police Saturday broke up a peaceful protest by a group of Tibetans here opposing Chinese rule over Tibet.
Around a dozen Tibetans, mostly students and executives working here, had gathered outside the Chinese Consulate at Nariman Point. They carried some placards and Tibetan flags as they silently stood in protest.
Shortly afterwards, police swooped broke up the protest and whisked them to a police station.
An official said the protesters did not have police permission for their demonstration.
A Tibetan spokesperson said the demonstration was to mark the 53rd anniversary of the Tibetan uprising that forced the Dalai Lama to flee to India.
"We want to highlight how people in Tibet have been deprived of all rights and freedom, including the right to practice our religion, Buddhism," the spokesperson told IANS.
Around 100,000 Tibetans, including the Dalai Lama, live in India.
