Dhaka, March 13 (IANS) At least 26 people were killed Tuesday when a boat carrying over 200 passengers capsized in Bangladesh's Meghna river after colliding with a cargo vessel, a media report said.
The incident took place in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj district early Tuesday.
The bodies of two men were found at 11.45 a.m. Another 24 bodies were found later.
Thirty passengers of the MV Shariatpur-1 swam ashore while the rest were missing.
Dulal Dewan, a survivor, told The Daily Star that he managed to reach shore after considerable effort.
"But eight of my family members are missing," Dewan was quoted as saying.
He said the double-decker boat left Shariatpur district for Dhaka around 9.30 p.m. Monday and the accident took place when it reached Char Kishori.
Md Azizul Alam, an official, said the Dhaka-bound launch sank after an oil-laden cargo boat collided with it around 2.30 a.m.
The government has formed a five-member committee to probe the incident.
