Islamabad, Jan 28 (IANS) At least five people were injured Saturday when hand grenades were lobbed at a shop in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, a media report said.

The attack took place around 11.40 a.m. when two militants on a motorbike hurled hand grenades at the shop in Liaquatabad area, in the central part of Karachi, reported Xinhua citing a TV report.

Imran Yaqoob, a senior police official, said the attack seems to be have been carried out by an extortion mafia.

Extortion mafia has been active in Karachi for years. Several political parties and banned religious organizations are reportedly involved in collecting extortion from businessmen and industrialists in the city.

Last December, a large number of traders held a protest in the same area against incidents of extortion and the threats given to them by mafia.
