Islamabad:  At least 100 patients at a heart institute in Pakistan's Punjab province have died from reactions to spurious drugs, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said.

Sharif said his team was investigating the drug scandal in Lahore's Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Dawn News reported.

The government has sent samples of the medicines to France and Britain for analysis. The provincial health department has confirmed only 72 deaths.

Sharif said action would be taken against those found guilty.
